There are a number of reasons that a roof leaks. You can probably guess that a roof leak is more likely to occur the older the shingles are. Did you know that poor insulation and improper ventilation are also two leading causes of leaks and roof deterioration? Even if you had the best quality shingles that money can buy, if the roofing system as a whole is not installed properly the roof will leak before the end of its lifetime.

There are additional elements that we can’t control, like the weather, that also contribute to roof leaks.  Wind can do some serious damage to roof shingles and improperly fastened roof flashing.  As a results, tree branches, or the entire tree, could come crashing down onto your house.  Other weather conditions, like rain and snow, are also potential hazards to keep in mind when it comes to your roof. Installing a quality shingle with a high wind and impact rating helps ensure that your roof can hold up to whatever mother nature sends!

Let’s not forget about our little furry friends like squirrels and raccoons.  They always seem to find a way to get inside when they want to.  Animals tend to tear off shingles, pull on vents and find every little opening to get inside.  The critters do not care if they are uninvited.  They will find a way in if you don’t protect your house properly.

Is your roof safe from leaks? How much lifetime does your roof have left? If you are unsure, we recommend having a professional inspect your roof, before leaks occur. Hiring roofing contractors to fix any leaks you may already have is the best way to protect your home. Don’t gamble with doing it yourself – you could potentially make the condition of the roof worse.
